Frequently Asked Questions

Still unsure about where to begin or need more information? You’ll find answers to frequently asked questions below.

1. Is it worth repairing my TV or should I buy a new one?

A: This is our most frequent question! We recommend the “50% Rule”: if the repair cost is less than half the price of a comparable new TV, repair is almost always the smarter, more economical choice. It saves you money and keeps functional technology out of the landfill. For premium sets like OLED or 8K models, repairing is nearly always worth it. However, if the screen itself is physically cracked, buying new is usually more cost-effective.

2. My TV has sound but no picture. What’s wrong?

A: This is a classic, telltale symptom of LED backlight failure. Essentially, the internal lights that illuminate the screen are broken, while the actual screen panel and internal circuit boards are likely fine. Mainstream shops often misdiagnose this as a terminal failure, but we specialize in precision backlight replacement. This complex service can rejuvenate your TV for a fraction of the cost of a replacement unit.

3. How much does a typical TV repair cost in Nova Scotia?

A: Repair costs vary depending on the device type and the specific failure. Most common component-level repairs—such as fixing a mainboard, a power supply board, or a damaged HDMI port—typically fall within the $150 CAD – $300 CAD range. Backlight replacements can be slightly higher due to the meticulous labour required. We offer a free initial diagnosis to provide you with an exact estimate.

4. My TV won’t turn on at all—no standby light, nothing. Can it be saved?

A: Yes, in most instances, this is a very solvable problem. This can indicate a failure within the Power Supply board or the Main Board. This can be caused by a faulty component like an eMMC chip, main processor, transistor or capacitor, or even a simple blown fuse due to a power surge. This type of repair is typically reliable and affordable, restoring your TV to full productivity quickly.

5. Can a cracked TV screen be repaired?

A: While theoretically possible, replacing the actual screen (called an open cell) is unfortunately the most expensive repair type, often costing 80–100% of the price of a brand-new, comparable TV. We do have some used open cells for sale at discount rates, but for most customers with physically cracked or shattered screens, we recommend purchasing a replacement unit.

6. Can you fix a broken HDMI port?

A: Yes! Many general electronics shops will tell you that you must replace the entire (expensive) mainboard if a port is damaged. As specialized micro-soldering technicians, we can re-attach or replace the port itself. We can desolder the broken port and install a genuine replacement directly onto the mainboard, saving you hundreds compared to a full board replacement. This is especially true for PS5 and XBOX console HDMI repair.

7. What brand TVs do you repair? Are you authorized?

A: We service all major TV brands, including LG, Sony, TCL, Hisense, and others. We are particularly proud to be a Samsung Authorized Service Center. This means we are officially certified by Samsung to perform professional repairs using genuine parts and advanced diagnostic tools for both warranty and non-warranty service.

8. Can you perform complex, board-level micro-soldering repairs?

A: Absolutely. Our Burnside facility is equipped with a BGA rework station, allowing us to de-solder and replace processors and eMMC chips rather than requiring you to purchase an entire new board.

9. Do you offer “Mail-In” repair services for customers outside HRM?

A: Yes! We have a structured mail-in program serving all of Canada. Customers outside the Halifax area often mail us their circuit boards or devices. You can safely pack your device and mail it to our specialized Burnside facility. We handle the diagnosis, repair, and secure return shipping with clear tracking throughout the process. Please contact us about circuit boards or devices not listed in our mail-in services section.

10. What kind of warranty do you offer on your repairs?

A: We stand behind the quality of our expertise. Nick’s LCD TV Repair offers a 6 month warranty on all parts and labor related to the specific repair we performed. We want you to have peace of mind that your TV will keep behaving long after it leaves our specialized workshop.
